Preach the Gospel!…But I am??

September 15, 2010

I am not a very smart man…I understand that and have never claimed to be. I think God understands that also. That is why when He is speaking to me, He has to make it really clear. And I must say, He is making some things really clear to me right now.

Over the last few weeks I have been spending my devotion time in 1 & 2 Timothy. I must admit it has been rocking my quiet time. A few times I had to look back and check to make sure the letter to Timothy was not actually addressed to me.

As Paul closed out his second letter to Timothy he wrote these words:

2 Timothy 4:1b “I give you this charge: 2Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.3For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths. 5But you, keep your head in all situations, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist…”

Then today I was at a conference where Dr. Alvin Reid challenged the audience to preach the Gospel. I realized that this sounds like a simple task. Of couse all ministers would say they preach the Gospel, but I believe often times I shy away from it when it becomes uncomfortable.

It’s easy for me to stand on stage and present salvation, but it’s a whole different story to preach the Gospel to everyone. The Gospel is messy, and personal. It gets into the lives of students and leaders. It’s ugly. As a Student Pastor it is much easier for me to keep things funny, and entertaining. The statement that Dr. Reid challenged me the most with was when he said, “”We’ve built student ministry on Entertainment, Enthusiasm, and Events, rather than on the Gospel.”

Ok God, I hear you! I want to be pliable. Allow me to become the pastor you have called me to be. Help me to ALWAYS preach the Gospel. Rather on stage, or one on one with a student or adult. Help me to be a Timothy…b

What do you do to ensure that you are preaching the Gospel in season and out?
